Founded in 1876 for “the children of Friends and those similarly sentimented,” Friends Academy is a Quaker, coeducational, independent, college-preparatory school for students aged three through twelfth grade. Our philosophy is based in the principles of integrity, simplicity, patience, moderation, peaceful resolution of conflict, and a belief that the silence and simple ministry of the “gathered meeting” bring the presence of God into the midst of our busy lives. A Friends Academy education starts with the inner light – the fundamental belief, firmly rooted in our Quaker tradition, that there is truth and goodness in each person. We believe that each child carries unique gifts and talents which we seek to nurture and celebrate. We prepare our students to go into the world and do good work, to use their gifts generously for worthwhile goals. A Friends education helps children grow in mind, body, and spirit, and builds a firm foundation for full lives, well lived. Friends Academy’s Upper School curriculum is a vigorous college preparatory program rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, enhanced by programs critical for developing 21st-century skills and knowledge. Our graduates are prepared to pursue their college aspirations and to use their education for the betterment of the community at large. A Friends students experience is enhanced by their ability to engage in the visual and performing arts, athletics, and develop their leadership skills through club and committee opportunities. The schools commitment to experiential learning further helps students to develop self-reliance and expand their learning beyond the classroom. The community service program engages students in meaningful experiences and projects, using their talents and skills for the benefit of others. The ninth grade Outdoor Education trip provides students the opportunity to develop collaborative problem-solving skills and a social experience in an outdoor environment. Students are offered opportunities to study abroad annually, allowing development of language competency, cultural awareness, and opportunities for service learning.
