Founded in 1876, Hathaway Brown is committed to a fusion of academic and experiential learning for girls in grades K-12, focusing on educational innovation as it prepares students to rise boldly to the challenges of our times and live out our motto of learning not for school, but for life. Classes in the Upper School are small and students are actively engaged in the learning process. Teachers encourage girls to develop their own ideas and opinions and to express them passionately and persuasively. We believe it is crucial for our students to take charge of their education so that when they move on to college and beyond, they are equipped to take advantage of every opportunity to further their intellectual and personal growth. Upper School girls are also involved outside of the classroom, whether on stage, on a playing field, at a debate tournament, working in a Case science lab or volunteering at a women’s shelter or a combination of all of those things! To help navigate the myriad choices academic and co-curricular each student has a faculty mentor who works with her throughout her four years in Upper School. Of course the mentor is not the only adult with whom our girls form lasting relationships. Teachers, coaches, staff members and even our bus drivers provide a network of support and encouragement that complements the deep and lasting friendships the girls develop with each other. HB’s motto “We learn not for school but for life” guides us in the Upper School as we strive to provide an innovative education that allows girls to develop to their fullest potential and enables them to be the visionary, confident and enlightened leaders the 21st century demands.
