The Shelton Leadership Center seeks to provide hands-on activities that assist developing young leaders to become more confident and selfless leaders. We expose students with necessary skills to thrive in today’s business and service driven world. The First-Year Shelton Challenge is a six-day summer experience for rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. The core curriculum focuses on Personal Leadership Assessment and Interpersonal Dynamics, Role of Values and Ethics in Leadership, Leadership Traits and Approaches, Teambuilding and Empowering Others, Social Responsibility, Public Speaking, and Goal Setting. The Take II Shelton Challenge is a six-day camp for those who have completed the first year challenge, and are ready to use the foundation that has been built to build upon their own values-based leadership approach. The camp will also focus on the following elements of leadership: how to build a team effectively; strategic visioning and planning; trustworthiness; loyalty; diversity and inclusion; public speaking; recognition; resource development; and leadership roles. Core leadership principles are addressed in the activities to help students discover their current style of leadership and their hidden leadership abilities. Reflection is a key component for each exercise and daily review. Students are placed in leadership roles and participate in a 360° evaluation conducted by the Coach, Mentor, Trainers (CMTs) and Peer Leaders. Students will get to experience residence hall living, eat meals at a campus dining hall and use indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
