Join the Mason Gross School of the Arts this summer! Explore, create, and perform under the guidance of faculty from the state’s premier arts conservatory. Expert Remote Instruction. Safe, Secure Online Experience. All RCA summer programs are conducted via Zoom with faculty who have spent a full year developing content and delivery methods specifically for online learning for both school-age learners and at the collegiate level. Rutgers Summer Acting Conservatory: RSAC is going virtual with a three week online intensive Acting Track. Our program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to train with professionals within a collegiate environment. Our comprehensive course features study in acting, movement, acting for the camera, EDI for the Actor, singing, and more. Our program is a once in a life time opportunity that will change the trajectory of our student’s lives. Rutgers Summer Dance Programs: Rutgers Summer Dance Conservatory (ages 13-18) The Rutgers Summer Dance Conservatory invites high school dancers to sample the rigorous schedule of ballet and modern technique classes that Mason Gross School of the Arts collegiate students participate in daily. Participants develop skills under the guidance of MGSA faculty, and guest artists offer special workshops on topics such as dancer health, strength & flexibility, college admissions, and dance career path exploration.*Audition required Pre-College Conservatory Ballet (ages 13-18) The Pre-College Conservatory level is designed for students who seek to build artistic acuity and technical endurance while preparing for college dance programs and careers in dance. Students learn and perform classical repertory in addition to ballet technique and pointe. Contemporary Dance (ages 11-18) This course develops a dancer’s musicality, fluidity, and expression in movement, as well as the ability to pick up choreography both in detail and style. Contemporary dance combines the genres of jazz, ballet, and modern technique, providing the student with a movement vocabulary that ranges from floor work to technical proficiency, from precise detailing to raw emotionality, and how the body aligns with music and storytelling. Students will be challenged to connect to dance not just with the body, but with the mind and soul. Hip-Hop (ages 10-18) Hip Hop is a high-energy dance class that will take you on a cultural and historical journey of foundations, grooves, freestyle and choreography. Exploring and integrating multiple styles within Hip Hop/Street Dance culture, students will develop musicality, self-confidence and encouragement to bring their own individual personality to movement vocabulary learned on a weekly basis. Rutgers Summer Art & Design Programs: Drawing & Painting Portfolio Development Intensives (ages 14-18) The Drawing & Painting Portfolio Development Intensives help students build their personal portfolios while developing awareness and abilities in drawing and painting. Contemporary art and art history are explored, leading into daily projects where students put the inspiration and techniques of the masters into practice. Students have the opportunity to develop independent projects over the course of the intensive. Participants will receive feedback on their artwork and portfolios from professional artists. Instructions for taking appropriate photos of artwork for a portfolio will be covered. Previous experience with drawing and painting is recommended. Graphic Design Intensive (ages 14-18) The Mason Gross Department of Art & Design guides students through the core principles of two-dimensional design and introduces HTML and CSS, the basic tools for creating websites. Working with hands-on and digital tools, students will manipulate imagery in a series of fun and inventive exercises that culminate in the creation of portfolio-ready student work. Student Adobe software licenses are included for the duration of the program. Each week includes an online video visit with a different guest designer. Design Labs are fun for all, and perfect for anyone thinking about design as a college major or career. Junior Drawing & Painting Intensive (ages 10-13) Students develop their drawing and painting skills through observation, memory, imagination, and experimentation. Academic and experimental approaches will be offered. Experimental approaches may include: visualizing sounds, exploring the sense of time and change, different qualities of light and shadow, and color through abstraction. Students develop individual projects that will incorporate all basic drawing and painting course material. Art history will also be discussed as it relates to each project. All Rutgers Community Arts visual art classes encourage personal exploration through materials and process. Previous experience with drawing and painting is recommended. 3D Model Making (ages 10-13) Discover how to navigate and create in a 3D digital world! Build your own dream house! 3D Model Making is an introduction to imagining through digital modeling programs, such as Tinkercad, SketchUp, and Blender. Students will learn how to model cars, airplanes, animals, and Lego pieces, as well as architectural and interior design. Through fostering an online community of young makers, students will explore modeling tools and features, the possibilities of making in 3D digital design, and sharing projects with others to receive feedback and support. Drawing & Painting Weekly Class (ages 10-13) Join RCA teaching artists for an around-the-world artistic adventure! The focus of this course is to introduce the young aspiring artist to drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture through material exploration. By learning the basics of art-making, students will develop problem-solving skills found only during the creative endeavor of the visual arts. Students will find their voice through color, marks, shapes, forms, and materials during telling stories through their artwork. They will also learn about different ways of making by exploring different cultures and their traditions. By the end of the course, students will go home with a body of work to showcase, a community of young fellow artists, and a new plethora of visual problem-solving abilities that can only be explored through the creative act of making. No prior experience required. Rutgers Summer Film & Animation Programs: Examine the elements of storytelling by learning the fundamentals of how to create memorable characters, settings, and narratives. Learn the basics in Introduction to Character Design, and then develop your animation skills with any of our additional Film & Animation programs! Introduction to Character Design Enter a journey of character creating, world-making, and storytelling! Through learning the art of character design, story-boarding, and illustration, students will obtain a basic grasp of comics, animation, and movie making. Students who are passionate about creating their own stories of fiction and enjoy working with others to realize their dreams are encouraged to enroll. By the end of the course, students will have the option to animate their own characters. Basic drawing and observational skills will be covered to give students the necessary tools for expressing their vision. No prior drawing experience is required and all are welcome to be part of the community! Animation Intensive Expert faculty from Mason Gross School of the Arts guide students through the creation of digital moving images in this in-depth summer intensive. Students with any level of experience learn narrative development, character design, story-boarding, stop-motion, and editing using free software such as Krita, Blender, and Pencil 2D. Additionally, students explore academic and career paths in the field. Specialized workshops teach students how to have an online presence for applying to colleges and for archiving their body of work for professional purposes, including how to create websites and workflows to utilize the online platform to one’s advantage. Students are able to receive extra assistance when developing individual projects in small groups and one-on-one instructor breakout sessions. The intensive culminates in a showcase for family and friends, where students exhibit their work. Weekly Animation Class Mason Gross School of the Arts Design faculty introduce video-making for students interested in creating digital moving images. Students learn narrative development, character design, story-boarding, and editing using free software such as Krita and Pencil 2D. The summer session culminates in a showcase for family and friends, where students exhibit their independent projects. Filmmaking Intensive This two-week intensive introduces students to the world of filmmaking and new media. Students learn the fundamentals of storyboarding, character design, cinematography, directing, sound design and editing. Students are introduced to new facets of filmmaking through small workshops, group, and independent projects alongside lectures and screenings. This course utilizes free software that allows quick access to filmmaking no matter the device. Students gain the skills necessary for analyzing and understanding their favorite movies, expressing their vision through the medium of filmmaking, and amass a body of work for applying to their college of choice. Additionally, students explore academic and career paths in the field. Specialized workshops teach students how to have an online presence for applying to colleges and for archiving their body of work for professional purposes. Students are able to receive extra assistance when developing individual projects in small groups and one-on-one instructor breakout sessions. The program culminates with a screening of each of the student’s independent film projects. Weekly Filmmaking Class This course introduces students to the world of filmmaking and new media. Students learn the fundamentals of storyboarding, character design, cinematography, directing, sound design and editing. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with free software that will allow them quick access to filmmaking no matter the device.  We will meet once a week and end the course with a screening of each of the student’s independent film projects. Rutgers Summer Music Programs This summer, join Rutgers music faculty for a virtual Jazz Workshop and Music Theory and Ear Training Bootcamp. Private music lessons are also available. We hope to see you next year, in person, for our exciting music ensemble intensives! Music Theory & Ear Training Bootcamp Rutgers music theory faculty prepare students for collegiate placement examinations and for college-level theory and aural skills courses. This program covers the foundational concepts of written music theory and ear training that are included in key signatures, time signatures, scales, intervals, harmony, solfege, sight-singing, and dictation. Jazz Workshop Learn to express yourself through the language of music. Take a journey through the history of jazz, from Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton through Steve Coleman and Makaya McCraven. Each week the class will study an artist and work on translating and adapting their concepts to our own playing. The 90 minute weekly session will be a combination of improvisation, history, styles, and performance. Percussionists must be able to play a keyboard percussion instrument.
