SML in Maine, provides programs to understand marine ecosystems and to develop sustainable solutions to environmental challenges through a residential high school program awarding 3 Cornell credits for 1-2 week courses. Marine Environmental Science (2 weeks) focuses on coastal Maine marine habitats in the context of global marine environmental issues and sustainability. Explorations in the rocky intertidal zone, excursions to neighboring islands to observe harbor seal and seabird colonies., field trips to seabird and whale foraging gronds. Appledore Island runs on 100% green power from wind turbine and solar panels. We also offer courses and internships for undergraduates. Introduction to the Biology of Sharks, Skates and Rays (1 week) provides opportunities to immerse yourself in the study of marine science, elasmobranch biology, and conservation, and put your scientific knowledge and experiences into action while learning to look at the world around you from new perspectives. Expect dissections and boat-based exercises! SML courses combine laboratory work and field work to expose students to real-world marine science.
