USY (United Synagogue Youth) is the USCJ’s (United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism)’s youth-focused branch, which since 1960, has taken thousands of teens across North America aboard USY on Wheels. On this cross-continent tour, Jewish teens explore the United States and Canada, discovering new sights and making lasting friendships through their travels.

USY on Wheels, East covers the East Coast of the United States and Canada, from Toronto to Georgia, on a four-week travel and self discovery adventure.

Here’s what students will experience:

  • Intense identity-building experience
  • Travel and live with their peers
  • Abundant opportunities for developing independence and personal growth

The trip also builds Jewish identity, immersing teens in meaningful experiences and discussions that strengthen their understanding of and commitment to Judaism.

Participants will:

  • Celebrate Shabbat
  • Find new and fun ways to pray (through yoga, crafts, and more!)
  • Keep kosher
  • Build their own Jewish communities on the road
  • Find a sense of kehilla (community) no matter where life’s travels take them

Social action and community service projects are an important component of USY on Wheels. During the course of the summer, teens participate in at least three hours of volunteer work.

Past projects on Wheels buses have included:

  • Making care packages for US army soldiers
  • Serving as marshals, pumping up the participants at AIDS Walks
  • Packing sandwiches and decorating bags to deliver to the homeless
  • Participating in a beach clean-up
  • Putting on a pop-up carnival for campers at the Adam Butzel Recreation Complex (just one example)
