Vanderbilt University is one of the country’s most prominent research universities, and this summer, high school students may join the fun through the Research Experience for High School Students (REHSS) pre-college program. This intensive six-week program immerses students in the day-to-day operations of a research lab. Students attend weekly breakout sessions with professors or graduate students, but the majority of their time is spent working on an individual research project under the supervision of a Vanderbilt faculty member.

As a REHSS student, you will be completely involved in laboratory activities and research under the supervision of a mentor and research team. Students will work a typical 40-hour work week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the week (Times may vary depending on research lab and experiments). In addition, to augment your lab education, you will attend weekly REHSS program sessions. Finally, you will discuss your research results in a student research symposium open to the Vanderbilt community at the end of the summer.

The REHSS program provides college-bound students with a highly selected research opportunity. The program will provide you a genuine peek at what high-level research looks like at a prestigious research institution. The program might help you narrow down your interests and pick a professional path in college. The program also gives you the opportunity to impress college admissions committees with your experience and commitment to further education. Many previous REHSS participants have had their research published in scientific journals, presented at national conferences, and learnt a lot about themselves and their scientific subject as a consequence of participation in the program.

The REHSS Program is for students who meet the following criteria:

  • Are sixteen (16) years of age or older by May of the program year (No exceptions will be allowed)
  • Are high school juniors at the time of application, are U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Live in the Nashville region and neighboring counties at the time of application (Davidson, Robertson, Sumner, Williamson, Cheatham, Rutherford, and Wilson County)
