The University of Florida Student Science Training Program (UF SSTP) is a six-week residential research program for chosen seniors who are at least 16 years old by the program start date and are interested in professions in science, medicine, math, computer science, or engineering. The program places a strong focus on research collaboration with a UF academic research scientist and his or her research team. Students who wish to attend the UF SSTP must be mature, capable of living and learning independently, eager to collaborate, and have a genuine interest in research.

The UF SSTP is a demanding and fast-paced program for students who are academically gifted and motivated. Students devote 30 hours a week to the faculty-ongoing mentor’s research, attend a daily lecture series on current research issues, and take part in a UF honors seminar session. Additionally, via academic, social, and service activities, students gain critical interpersonal, leadership, professional communication, and organizational skills. Dual enrollment credit is available to students enrolled in a Florida high school.

Duration: 6 weeks

Eligibility: Rising high school seniors (at least 16 years of age)

The Student Science Training Program (SSTP) at the University of Florida is a great alternative for high school students interested in determining whether a STEM profession is suited for them.

This demanding, fast-paced program requires students to conduct at least 30 hours of research each week alongside a faculty mentor.

Students also attend programs designed to help them build professional leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

The SSTP consists of three major components: lab research, a science-focused lecture series, and participation in a UF Honors Program seminar.

Students participate in small group conversations with advisors and peers throughout the SSTP, submit weekly lab reports, develop a scientific research paper, present a research poster based on their results, and make two oral presentations.

Counselors and educators provide students with frequent feedback.

On weekends, learners may participate in service learning initiatives, field trips, and other social activities.
