Students interested in a hands-on scientific immersion full of real-world experiential learning and a ton of once-in-a-lifetime adventure may be great candidates for a Science Camps of America summer camp, such as the Hawaii Island Summer Camp for Teens! This particular experiential program introduces students to the Big Island of Hawaii by delving into nature, from the study of the volcanoes and rocks (geology) to the streams, forests, ocean (marine life), and sky. The summer program is geared for teens 13 through 17 (primarily grades 8 through 12), and international students are welcome, though travel is required.
Science Camps of America operates out of Hawaii and currently offers three core programs: One focused on land and sea, one focused on air and space, and a shorter STEM immersion. More program details are below and on their website:
Land & Sea Camp is for students eager to learn about geology, oceanography, forestry, biology, zoology, and the environment at large. Students will visit Kilauea, which is the world’s most active volcano. Students will both learn about the ash, the minerals, and the beaches, as well as the natural events that take place and how they affect the region’s plants, animals, and people.
Air and Space Camp enables students to learn about the Earth’s atmosphere, the climate, astronomy, and outer space exploration. Students will visit observatories, as well as see centers where astronomers and climate scientists work. They’ll learn how to measure concentrations of substances in the atmosphere, identify alternate energy development, and understand the causes behind and effects of climate change.
In addition to the more nature- and outdoor-focused above camps, Science Camps of America also offers shorter (week-long) STEM immersion workshops, which may be a great option for students who already have a full schedule and can’t commit to a longer program or who have a demonstrated interest in STEM learning.
