The Massachusetts Student Trooper Program is designed to give teens a glimpse into what jobs in law enforcement look like, what’s involved in training, and to expose those interested to the everyday demands that a career in law enforcement entails.
This program is an intensive 1-week residential learning experience held at the State Police Academy located in New Braintree. Training itself is mentally and physically demanding with a focus on discipline to prepare those who are interested in law enforcement.
Structure:
- Vigorous physical training
- Days start at 5:30 a.m. and end at 10 p.m. daily
- Candidates expected to be highly motivated and willing to work as teams to succeed in daily challenges
- Led by veteran trainers from the Massachusetts State Police
- Both classroom and hands-on training in topics such as:
- First Aid/CPR
- Criminal Law
- Officer Safety
- Crime Scene Investigations
- Safe Driving
- Leadership
- Internet Safety
- Team Building
- Physical Fitness
- Demonstrations by specialized units of the Massachusetts State Police, such as the K9 Unit or Air Wing
Qualifications for student troopers:
- Open to high school students ages 15-17 that are in good scholastic standing
- Well-groomed appearance with hair neatly trimmed in accordance with policies of the State Police Academy
- Rigorous training and physical stress in a para-military-type academy setting
- The Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Student Trooper Program is open to all, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, or nationality
- As part of the application process, a physical examination will be required
- A medical form requiring a doctor’s signature will be required upon your acceptance to the program.
