The mission of the Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) is to promote civic engagement by youth. The MYC provides high school students with opportunities to learn about city government, develop leadership skills, and bring awareness to issues that are important to Houston’s youth. The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) started in 1998 with the mission of providing high school students the opportunity to develop leadership and citizenship skills while learning about city government. Modeled after the elected Houston City Council, the MYC provides valuable experience to its members in the workings of city government. High school students are eligible who reside within the City of Houston city limits. Successful applicants demonstrate strong interests in gaining knowledge about city government, civic engagement and promoting discussion on youth-related issues. They also demonstrate participation in extracurricular activities and volunteering, and work well with other young people from a variety of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
