Methods in Stem Cell Engineering enables high school students to genetically engineer human stem cells using the cutting-edge RNA interference (RNAi) techniques. Study the effects of silencing an oncogene in cancer stem cells, working hands-on in a biotech lab with professional industry scientists in this unique program. INTRODUCTION. Methods in Stem Cell Engineering is a four-session program that explores the science of gene modulation in stem cells. Participating students learn basic hands-on lab skills, using RNA interference (RNAi) to silence the expression of an oncogene in human cancer stem cells. RNAi is a sophisticated technique used by all bioscientists to inhibit the expression of specific genes in order to study their function. During Methods in Stem Cell Engineering, students learn bioinformatical approaches to designing an RNAi experiment and measure the effect of inhibiting the oncogene oct-4 in stem cells derived from testicular cancers. They also explore the real-world applications of RNAi technology, hearing from experts in the field of stem cell engineering. CURRICULUM. Methods in Stem Cell Engeineering focuses during each session on the following topics: Session 1: Intro to cells, stem cells and RNAi gene silencing. Session 2: Working with stem cells in the lab. Session 3: RNAi mediated gene silencing techniques. Session 4: Analysis and application of gene silencing. KEY FEATURES. – College-level lectures – Hands-on lab classes – Cutting edge techniques* – Networking with professional science mentors – Career education *Intro to stem cell systems provides practical training in: BSL-2 lab safety procedures, aseptic technique, electroporation, RNAi mediated gene knockdown, antibody labeling and microscopy (phase contrast and fluorescent). Methods in Stem Cell Engineering is an afterschool program that takes place over days. Each session is 3 hours long. A tuition is charged to cover the cost of lab supplies, instructor salaries and lab facilities. This website uses cookies to ensure you get the best experience on our website.
