Students interested in pursuing a degree in filmmaking or a career in the entertainment industry can accelerate their hands-on studies with New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Online High School Filmmakers Workshop, which is a four-credit program for high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The workshop, which is offered year-round, covers a wide variety of filmmaking styles, from documentary to narrative, as well as experimental approaches to filmmaking.
Students are introduced to both the theory, history, and real-world contemporary techniques of developing and producing short films that are shot and edited digitally.
Topics covered: Students gain the experience of working in online crews (collaborative virtually) to develop their directing, shooting, and editing skills as they produce music videos and short films. The Tisch-provided program emphasizes storytelling through visual language and ensures that beyond filmmaking, students learn the basics of screenwriting through writing exercises, reading assignments, and viewing online media examples, as well as script development and short film research.
Structure and outcome: The online workshop is delivered through a series of streaming lectures and video meetings, which highlight the fundamentals of story structure, character development, communication of thematic statements, and visual storytelling, among other topics. Graduates of the Online High School Filmmakers Workshop will be uniquely and impressively positioned and prepared to further pursue a degree, internship, job, or career in the entertainment, filmmaking, screenwriting, or videography space (or a tangentially related field).
