Rolling Hills Preparatory School, founded in 1981, is an independent coeducational day school for grades six through twelve, located in a residential community outside of Los Angeles. We are very proud of our high academic standards, our warm and supportive community, and our beautiful new campus. A strong, diverse educational community of 300 people, our school size is ideal: large enough to offer an outstanding range of academic courses, arts, and athletics, and one of the country’s premier outdoor education programs, yet small enough that every student is known personally. Our mission to develop in our students disciplined minds, sound character, healthy bodies and creative spirits is as relevant today as it was when the school was founded more than thirty years ago. And we have recently completed our analysis of what we believe makes a successful graduate in this now not-so-new century: the Five Cs of Critical Thinking, Creativity, Character, Collaboration and Communication (including cultural competency) are the tools we must be providing our students through the vehicle of our curriculum. What equips RHP so well to deliver that curriculum? Take “Character” for instance: Our low student/teacher ratio of less than 10/1 allows close contact between adult and students, so that we can address individual needs and maximize the potential of each young person. Community service–we call it ‘Service Learning’–is encouraged, not because it “looks good on the transcript,” but because working individually and collectively to help others around us is an important part of developing strong character. And, while RHP is indeed a rigorous, challenging academic institution, we encourage balance in our children’s lives as well as in our own.
