The Stanford Program for Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in Physics (SPINWIP) is a virtual summer STEM program hosted by the Stanford Physics Department, designed to get high-school girls excited about physics.

The program is 3 weeks long, free to participants, and held through video chat.

First-generation students and those from underrepresented backgrounds in physics are particularly encouraged to apply. No prior knowledge of physics or coding is needed.

What students learn:

  • Cutting-edge research in physics in fields such as quantum physics, quantum computing, astrophysics, and cosmology
  • How to code in Python, and then apply their coding skills to physics-based projects

Program structure and delivery:

  • Timing: The program is delivered from 9 am to 1 pm PT Mon – Fri for three weeks
  • Structure: Students will attend lectures by Stanford professors and researchers
  • Teamwork: They will work in small groups led by Stanford undergraduates
  • College prep & career planning: Students also attend college planning and career development workshops
  • Mentorship & networking: Students will be able to find mentors in Stanford students and professors

Eligibility: High-school students both in the US and from countries outside the US are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to first-generation students, and students from underrepresented backgrounds in physics, as well as rising juniors. While this program is geared towards women in physics, students of all genders and gender identities are welcome to apply.
