Summer Scholars, Explorations in Architecture and Design is a pre-college three-week program at the U-SoA for students interested in architecture and design. Explorations introduces students to design processes while also highlighting the important role that architects and designers play in influencing and constructing society. High school students can also earn six (6) college credits with this program.
The curriculum at U-SoA will serve as a model, with particularly tailored courses in Design, Graphics, and Theory, with a specific topic for each session. Interconnected parts of architecture, such as design, landscape architecture, historic preservation, and urban planning, will let the student combine classroom learning with genuine hands-on practice.
Students will explore and get acquainted with the approaches and concerns of designers in the studio by sketching, modeling, and proposing designs for a variety of projects. Drafting tools and equipment, computer-aided design programming, and photography equipment will be available at the School of Architecture. Courses in the studio will stimulate intuitive action and fast visual analysis. The kids’ work will be displayed in a school-wide exhibition at the end of the program.
The rigorous three-week course combines “laboratory” design studio activities with lectures from eminent academics and guest practitioners. These “laboratory” experiences will be complemented by local trips to key architectural and urban design sites, which will include architectural styles such as Mediterranean, Art Deco, MiMo, Bahamian, Cape Dutch, Mission, Neo-Classical, and many more. Six college credits can be earned in three weeks.
The University of Miami, as one of the nation’s most active research universities, specializes in creative thinking and excellent teaching, a combination that is highlighted in the Summer Scholars Program. This three-week credit program is offered to students in grades 10 and 11.
