At XUSOM, we believe that anyone with the skills, passion, and commitment to enter the field of medicine or nursing should have access to a high-quality, low-cost education that will allow them to fulfill their dreams of practicing in their desired field of choice. 5 1/2 Year Pre-Med / MD Program Xavier University School of Medicine offers a program where high school graduates receive Pre-Med classes that will prepare them to enter into the medical program without first obtaining a bachelors degree. High School Diploma Cumulative GPA: 3.0 SAT: 1200 (old system) 1800 (new system) or ACT 26 TOFEL: 231 (for other than USA, UK, or Canadian students) IELTS: 6.0 (for other than USA, UK, or Canadian students) For those students who have no reservations about their career path and are clear about their choice to pursue a career in medicine, this program is ideal. The initial four semesters focus on pre-medical studies to fully prepare these students to enter the pre-clinical MD program at Xavier University School of Medicine. After completing the initial four semesters, the student then joins the MD program, completes the pre-clinical and clinical rotations, and remains a qualified candidate for medical licensure in the US. Typical high school graduates who complete the 5½ year program are fully prepared to enter residency before the age of 23. Students in this program are generally grateful to have secured their position as a medical student without investing additional time and money pursuing an undergraduate or a Masters degree. 4 Year MD Program Students enrolled in our MD program will take part in twenty months of pre-clinical courses and clinical training that will prepare them to enter a residency program in the U.S. All applicants applying for the 4 Year MD Program are required to finish at least 2 academic years & 90 credithours of undergraduate studies with a cumulative GPA of 3.0, including the following subjects: (8 credit hours) of Inorganic or General Chemistry (with labs) (8 credit hours) of Organic Chemistry (with labs) (8 credit hours) of General Biology (with labs) (8 credit hours) of Physics (with labs) (6 credit hours) of English (8 credit hours) of Pre-Calculus/Calculus These requirements are determined by State Medical Boards and are required for future licensure in the respective states.These are simply guidelines and are not meant to be all-inclusive, please contact our office if you have questions. Twenty months of pre-clinical courses in bio-medical sciences are combined with a Clinical Board Series utilizing patient and physician educators to maximize the experience for each student. After the coursework and the clinical training, students are prepared to enter into any residency program in the United States. There is no compromise in the total number of hours credited or clinical exposure with this program. Nursing Program Our nursing program allows students to earn a three year accelerated Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing. The BSN program of nursing complements the medical school and helps meet the local, regional, and global need for highly trained, compassionate nurses. In addition to alleviating a critical nursing shortage, graduates of Xavier’s BSN program are also able to use their education to achieve leadership roles in providing and improving healthcare through effective communication. The BSN program integrates a minimum of 58 semester hours of liberal arts educational programming that includes natural sciences, mathematics, communications, socio-behavioral science and humanities. The missions of XUSOM’s School of Nursing (XUSON) is to prepare baccalaureate-educated registered nurses (RN) who will then provide compassionate services, delivering the highest standard of safe nursing care to individuals, families, and communities. Clinical Sciences (United States) XUSOM offers students this unique semester to not only prepare them for the USMLE Step 1 Exam, but also for a smooth transition into clinical medicine in the United States. Students gain valuable knowledge during this time and a clear comprehension of the healthcare system and post graduate medical training in the United States. Clinical Rotations All rotations are available within the United States. Core Rotations Students become directly involved in the management of patients.Third year students rotate through the following clerkships: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Family Practice, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology. The duration dedicated to individual core rotation is as follows: 12 Weeks of Internal Medicine 12 Weeks of General Surgery 6 Weeks of Family Practice 6 Weeks of OB/GYN 6 Weeks Pediatrics 6 Weeks Psychiatry Elective Rotations Students may select from a variety of Elective rotations, a partial list is included below: Medicine Family Practice Emergency Medicine Dermatology Medical Oncology Radiology Pathology Anestesiology Critical Care Medicine Cardiology Pulmonology Infectious Diseases Nephrology Hematology / Oncology Rheumatology Immunology Gastroenterology Pediatrics Cardiology Pulmonary Diseases Infectious Diseases Nephrology Hematology / Oncology NICU Neuro-Psychiatry Neurology Psychiatry Surgery General Surgery Orthopedic Surgery Ophthalmology Otolaryngology Plastic Surgery Surgical Oncology Colorectal Surgery OB/GYN High Risk Obstetrics Infertility Gynecological Oncology ESL Program Xavier University School of Medicine, Aruba bachelor program for the Brazilian scientific mobility program – Science Without Borders. The program consists of one year (three semesters) of English, followed by two semesters of core classes, and four semesters of concentration classes. Students have the option of testing out of the third semester of English and advancing straight to their first core semester. The total program will be nine semesters, or eight if a student tests out of a semester of English. The following majors will be offered: Pre-clinical and health sciences Biology Chemistry Anatomy and physiology Biotechnology Information Technology Pharmacology Public Health Year 1 will be the same for all majors. Students may test out of advanced English by taking the TOEFL after semester 2. If students pass the exam, they may then advance to their first core semester.
